hello internet :):
so happy new year and a happy lunar new year to all of you. did you guys get a lot of red packets this year? i'm back home from my visit to kedah and it looks like i've fallen sick. it's probably a heatstroke but i'll say it's because from all the heaty chinese new year food i ate (no regrets tho). i'm in my comfy wear, drinking some tea whilst blogging away on today's post.
to kick start the new year, i went overseas! okay maybe not exactly overseas, it was more of a domestic flight in the country. i went to sabah with my college friends to meet our sabah friends (yay reunion). honestly it just started off as a simple joking suggestion but who knew it would really happen, huh. we were only able to do this because the flight tickets were on discount actually. unfortunately, not the whole gang was able to come with us. there were six of us: me, sther, zr, janice, charles and keen. it was still a fun trip regardless but we would always loved the experience more if everyone was able to be together, just at least little longer. so we booked our tickets, kinda planned half-way hahaha (that's what you get, we're kids). and to sabah here we go!
sabah was my first trip overseas on my own. i mean it was with friends, yes but, it was my first time going out alone, on a plane, to a foreign place without my parents. even though i went to sabah once, the experience is definitely different when you're travelling alone. this is when i truly felt that i'm a fully functioning adult! i was doing what i want and wow the freedom just felt incredible. and what makes it better is that i'm able to share this journey with my newfound friends.
Day 1; Chill Day-Out
the morning of the start of the journey, we sat on the 7AM bus from One Utama to KLIA2. who knew they had buses that bring you to the airport there, am i right? i arrived at the site first and bought tickets for me and esther. one ticket only costs like rm15 (thx public transport). the bus was fairly punctual which is a good thing! we even arrived at the airport earlier than expected. tip: you should take this bus instead of a taxi to the airport because it's honestly WAY cheaper. my face literally lit up when i saw esther arriving, i haven't seen her in so long i miss her T-T. and her mom brought pineapple tarts! bless mama low.
KLIA2 is honestly a good place to shop for stuff. we haven't even started our trip to sabah and esther already bought socks from the store, redeye lol. AND THEN WE REUNITED WITH ZR AND JANICE. zr's face got brighter because she dyed her hair ahahaha. had a nice catch-up sesh with them when esther was eating her breakfast. i wore a black tee and cool-ass sweatpants, i should've taken a picture. maybe i could've done an ootd for my sabah trip. take note: ootd pics for next trip. after all the walking and crazy toilet breaks, we got on the plane and zooooom.
in the plane: me and esther first started off talking casually to sleeping until the most annoying case scenario happened. we were sleeping super soundly until this flight attendant keeps calling for a boarding pass loudly. i woke up following esther and followed exactly what esther did: giving the boarding pass to the stewardess half-conscious. to find out that, the stewardess was only requesting the pass for the third person sitting next to us. turns out they needed that in order to get airplane food. but boy, did that get me and esther pissed lol. so we played the uno cards esther brought and played "heart attack". zr and janice could hear us slapping on the plane as we play the game lol.

WHADDUP SABAH WE HERE! we were greeted by our first sabah friend and tour guide, huini. it was like a ray of light shone behind her and the choir was singing "aaaaaaah~" (man i feel like crying). we met her mother and her cute brother (SO CUTE). and it was our first time sitting on her car ohmergerd. we were kinda scared bc she told us the story about her "slight speed-up" when she drove on the roundabout lol. even her mom told us to look after her because we have more experience. huini's driving skills were pretty good, okay maybe slightly scary but still can hang on hahaha.
after saying bye to mama ng, huini drove us to our hotel! ooooh fancyyy. we were staying in a hotel nearby IMAGO shopping mall and i didn't expect the hotel to look THIS GOOD. just look at the pics:

they have a FKIN CHANDELIER!

they even had the spinny stairway (so cool).
everyone was crazy about the spinny stairway but walking after maybe one round of it, everyone hated it LOL. it was too much work to climb upstairs. they even gave us free sunglasses in the kitchen cupboards lol but most of them were broken sooo-.
janice: "who said they fkin liked the stairs, huh?! which idiot said that?"
me: "me. i hate it now."
we haven't had lunch so might as well take this chance to explore the shopping mall and see what they have there. it was a pretty big mall. probably a half of one utama if i can say. they had both cheap and luxurious stores which made it a pretty modern mall. we were thinking hard on what to eat and just decided to try the famous sandwich bread at Kumamono (熊掌包). their set combo was pretty good but lemme tell you the bread is bigger than you think. it looks small but most of us couldn't finish it.
tip: and if you ever order one, do not order milk-flavoured bread. the milk flavour on the bread is so strong it tastes gross afterwards, trust me. maybe if i changed it to cinnamon it would've tasted great.

after lunch, me and zr had to get some shampoo bc we thought the airport wouldn't allow it but they did so now we gotta buy our own. i suggested on getting carrie junior, y'know the baby brand as a joke. but then:
zr: "let's do it."
me: "you serious? i'm seriously gonna buy this if you say yes."
zr: "yeah! let's get it."
me: "ohmygod i can't wait to smell like a baby."
time sure passed by fast when you're shopping with girls and it was dinner time already. we tried the sabah famous sang nyuk mian (生肉面). the pork soup was delicious. and so after that, we went to the airport to fetch keen and charles because they went to sandakan first to find their sabah friends and unite with us later. both of them came in pretty high in the car lol.
since we're legal teens, we don't sleep early obviously so we went out for supper, bingsu! we got chocolate and cheescake. i thought having cheesecake bingsu during midnight wouldn't do justice to my tummy but it tasted better than the chocolate. after we came back from supper, i was already homesick on the first day lol (i'm such a weenie) and told my fam i miss them. they gave me sweet wishes and told me to enjoy the time i had with my friends. and off to sleep i go for the next day.
Day 2; Mangrove Bay
it was a beautiful morning in sabah. i woke up the earliest cuz i'm prone to alarm clocks. and i literally paced around the room, thinking of what to do when everyone's asleep. i played on my phone till they started waking up one by one. so you could say i was ecstatic and kinda dragged esther to follow me to the hotel swimming pool because of sheer curiosity. keen and charles joined us afterwards.
we all woke up late so we had brunch: beef noodles, claypot rice and asam laksa at this famous laksa joint. to our surprise, the clock tower that we researched before and joked that "let's just look at the clock tower for all the four days, how about that?" was right in front of our eyes lol. after brunch, we went and checked the place out.
the entrance to the clock tower was locked so unfortunately we were only able to look at up front on the outside. we hurried back to the hotel to get on our van which we called that would bring us to our upcoming island adventure! they brought us to try out some coconut pudding and ohmygod even though i'm not a big fan of coconut but the pudding was really good. you don't get full of it and you just keep eating it until it disappears. it's THAT good. then we went to the port to wait for our boat towards mangrove bay.

i couldn't be it the pic cuz i photographed it. and it was such a nice picture too :(
~ on our way to mangrove bay ~
while everyone's busy doing their thing, i got distracted by this batik painting area and i kinda stayed there till everyone joined in hahaha. the boat painting was mine and i was pondering whether what that weird shape on the top left corner was and charles told me it was an UFO so he told me draw someone to get sucked on it lol. turns out it was a cloud lmao (too late to change it now anyways). the masterpiece to my right is keen and charles'. their art skills are van gogh level with their paint splattering mess lol. but omg janice is amazing at watercolour i'm so jealous. her colors mix into this beautiful shimmering pastel art. it's gorgeous. and she doesn't even take art classes.
"it is what you define it to be. it's something that you and I see or believe in differently. that is art." - deep charles quote 2k17.

janice's work
later we went on some kayaking fun. i didn't join in because there was an uneven amount of people so i skipped out. even though i would love to try it some other time. so instead i went around and explored the island and found a hammock to chill in. and after that, we sat on the banana boat (totes fun). the OGs: me, zr and sther didn't fall off the boat so we had to get the others out of the water. huini struggling to climb up was so funny lol and i promised i would save janice if she fall but she had a life jacket so everything's fine hhaa.
after all that we were off to see the night fireflies. they brought us to a deserted island first though which was questionable but the view was too good to not go there. there was the moonlit sky in the middle of day, on top of the trees with sand in our feet and the blow of the ocean breeze, accompanied by the lovely sound of waves crashing onto the shore endlessly. i should put that long sentence in a book hahaha.

the fireflies were a beautiful experience. a bunch of teens having their eyes sparkled over the glow that fireflies make was just scenic. i especially love sharing these intimate moments with friends, and i always liked it better if it was at night. i don't know why but the night sky always seems to cast some magic on me and my moments.
after our scrumptious dinner with the youngest janice pouring us tea (hahaha so asian), we called it a night and went back to our hotel for the next day. of course we had satay supper first before going to sleep hahaha. nights.
our trip to kundasang and pulau sapi is up next.
To be continued in the next post xx.
// lately i've been finding myself pondering over sabah over and over again. maybe because it passed by way too quickly and i'm finding it hard to let go.
// people sure do come in unexpectedly and can make a huge impact on your life even though the time you met was brief. it's something interesting i learned in life.
